Education

I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) with credentials to practice in Washington State. I received a bachelor of science in environmental science from Washington State University and a master of arts in counseling psychology from St. Martins University. My elective coursework focused on family therapy, sex therapy, eating disorders, and grief and loss. Continuing education has included coursework in treating trauma with Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS), Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT), nutritional and integrative approaches to mental health treatment, Moral Reconation Therapy, and ethical telehealth practice.

Experience

I spent the first seven years of my career serving at an American Indian tribal outpatient program where I offered individual and couples counseling services to adults and youth. I primarily worked with adults recovering from childhood abuse. More recently I started working with people of faith to address anxiety and depression, and to recover from betrayal trauma, childhood trauma, religious abuse, and sexual abuse. I have provided parent coaching, and supported parents and children to navigate conflict. I have also supported couples who want to improve their relationship.

Research & Writing

I completed undergraduate research in ecological restoration. I researched on rainforest restoration in Costa Rica and temporal grassland restoration in the Willamette National Forest. I presented my research at the annual conference of the Ecological Society of America and my research was published as part of a larger study conducted through the University of Washington. After pivoting my career to counseling, I have carried my passion for “restoration” into my therapeutic work where I work with individuals to restore that which was lost, taken, or unbalanced.

Speaking & Community

My public speaking engagements have focused on normalizing trauma-related responses within faith culture. For example, I know that statements like “forgive others” or “cast away anger” can evoke shame and confusion among trauma-survivors. I educate about how broader cultural beliefs add to this confusion and how to live true principles while deciphering between, healing from, and protecting oneself from abuse.

On a more personal note…

I am a born-and-raised Washingtonian from a multi-generational logging family with Coast Salish heritage. I currently live and work in the south Puget Sound region where my ancestors have walked for generations. I spend my time with my three children (all boys). I enjoy cooking, bike-riding, reading historical fiction, and going for long walks.

During a time of transition and personal contemplation, I felt drawn to the counseling profession; I had a natural interest in human potential and wanted to develop myself and help others do the same. Through my personal and professional therapy work, I have come to believe that we each carry emotional burdens from earlier generations. I also believe that the path to healing is so much bigger than ourselves and that it is part of the legacy that we pass on to future generations. I love what I do and I have been honored to help countless individuals walk this sacred healing path.
